What is a CBR or CBZ comic archive?

CBR (Comic Book RAR) and CBZ (Comic Book ZIP) are archive containers designed specifically for bundling sequential comic book and manga page images into a single convenient file.

Rather than manually extracting dozens of individual JPEG, PNG, or WebP images into a folder, comic readers inspect the internal structure, sort filenames in natural alphanumeric sequence, and present them in a seamless reading view.

FileViewerHub decompresses and renders these archives locally in your browser memory using WebAssembly. Your comics never leave your device, ensuring maximum speed and complete privacy.

Powerful Client-Side Comic Reader Tools

FileViewerHub processes your comic book archives inside your browser for instant viewing, reading customization, and archive sanitization without compromising your privacy.

1

In-Browser RAR & ZIP Extraction

Avoid installing heavy desktop comic viewers or unarchiving tools. Our client-side WebAssembly engine decompresses .cbr (RAR) and .cbz (ZIP) files directly in your browser, enabling instant previewing on any device in milliseconds.

2

Spreads, Manga & RTL Reading

Read your comics the way they were meant to be enjoyed. Switch between single-page and two-page spreads with smart cover alignment, enable Manga RTL mode for authentic Japanese comic reading, and zoom smoothly on high-resolution panels.

3

Safe Local CBZ Sanitization

Clean and optimize comic archives with a single click. Strip executables, scripts, nested archives, directory traversal paths, and OS junk files while preserving visual page quality in a standardized, universally compatible CBZ archive.

What you can view inside a CBR / CBZ file

High-resolution comic and manga page images
Single-page view and two-page spread layouts
Lazy-loaded thumbnail rail for quick page jumping

FileViewerHub renders browser-compatible raster page images in bounded memory. Non-image entries or unsupported formats are safely bypassed.

CBR vs CBZ: What's the Difference?

PropertyCBRCBZ
Container formatRAR (.rar container)ZIP (.zip container)
File extension.cbr.cbz
Typical contentsSequential comic page imagesSequential comic page images
Universal compatibilityRequires RAR decompressionNative ZIP support everywhere
Sanitized outputCBZ (ZIP format)CBZ (ZIP format)

The sanitizer always outputs CBZ because creating RAR archives in the browser is not practical. ZIP is the standard container for CBZ and is universally compatible. CBR and CBZ use different compression algorithms internally - they are not identical formats, even though both serve the same purpose of bundling comic page images.

Sanitize a CBR or CBZ Comic Archive

The sanitizer creates a new CBZ containing validated comic page images and, when selected, safely reconstructed comic metadata. It removes archive entries that are not needed for reading, including unsupported files, unsafe paths, and common system files.

Important

This is structural archive sanitization, not antivirus scanning, and it does not guarantee that an image file is free from every possible security issue.

What gets removed during sanitization

HTML and JavaScript files
SVG and executable files
Nested archives (.zip, .rar, .7z)
System files (.DS_Store, Thumbs.db, desktop.ini)
Unsafe paths (directory traversal, absolute paths)
Archive comments and empty directories
Resource fork files (__MACOSX)
Unknown binary and corrupt entries

Page image quality

Page images are kept without re-encoding where possible. This preserves their original visual quality. However, embedded metadata inside the page images themselves (such as EXIF or IPTC data) is not removed by the structural sanitizer.

What Is ComicInfo.xml?

Some comic archives include an optional XML metadata file named ComicInfo.xml. It provides structured bibliographic details such as comic title, series name, issue number, creator credits (writer, penciller, inker, colorist), publisher, language, page count, and reading direction.

When ComicInfo.xml is present and indicates right-to-left or manga orientation, FileViewerHub automatically configures Manga RTL mode for a tailored reading experience. The reader works seamlessly with or without metadata present.

Open CBR and CBZ files without dedicated desktop software

You do not need to install heavy desktop comic viewers like Calibre or CDisplayEx just to inspect or read a comic file. FileViewerHub operates entirely in your web browser, making it functional across Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebooks, iPads, and mobile phones.

This is ideal for quickly reading comic issues, verifying downloaded archives, or sanitizing files before transferring them to e-readers.

What programs open CBR and CBZ files?

Several established comic readers can open CBR and CBZ files across various operating systems:

Calibre (Cross-platform)CDisplayEx (Windows & Android)YACReader (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS)MComic (Cross-platform)FileViewerHub (online, no install)

FileViewerHub is a browser-based file reading tool and is not a full replacement for desktop comic library management software.

Is It Safe to Open Comic Archives Online?

Comic book archives can sometimes contain unwanted extra files, scripts, or bloated assets. FileViewerHub runs entirely client-side in browser sandbox memory. Your comic files, passwords, reading progress, and page images never leave your computer and are never uploaded to our servers.

Privacy

Comic archive contents, page images, passwords, and reading progress never leave your browser. Only anonymised telemetry (such as viewer type and file size bucket) may be collected.

Frequently asked questions

What is a CBR file?

A CBR file is a comic book archive that uses RAR compression to bundle sequential page images into a single file. The .cbr extension tells comic readers to treat the archive as an ordered sequence of images rather than a general-purpose compressed folder.

What is a CBZ file?

A CBZ file is a comic book archive that uses ZIP compression. It contains ordered page images (JPEG, PNG, WebP, etc.) bundled together. CBZ is the most widely supported comic archive format because ZIP is built into virtually every operating system.

What is the difference between CBR and CBZ?

CBR uses RAR compression while CBZ uses ZIP compression. Both contain the same types of comic page images. RAR can achieve better compression ratios for some content, while ZIP is more universally supported. FileViewerHub's sanitizer always outputs CBZ because creating RAR archives in the browser is not practical.

Can I open CBR files without installing a comic reader?

Yes. Drag and drop your .cbr file into the FileViewerHub viewer and the pages are extracted and displayed directly in your browser. No desktop software installation is required. The RAR decompression happens locally using WebAssembly.

Can I read manga right to left?

Yes. Enable Manga Mode or select RTL reading direction. The reader reverses the page-turn direction and adjusts two-page spread ordering so the earlier page appears on the right. If the archive includes ComicInfo.xml with a manga indicator, RTL mode is enabled automatically.

Does FileViewerHub remember where I stopped reading?

Yes. The viewer stores your current page, bookmarks, and reading direction locally in your browser using a privacy-friendly fingerprint based on file size and byte samples. When you reopen the same comic, reading resumes where you left off. No filenames or file contents are stored.

Where are my bookmarks stored?

Bookmarks are stored locally in your browser's localStorage. They are associated with a fingerprint derived from the file's size and partial byte samples, not the filename. Bookmarks are never uploaded to any server.

What does the CBR/CBZ sanitizer remove?

The sanitizer scans the archive structure and creates a new CBZ containing only validated comic page images and, optionally, a safely reconstructed ComicInfo.xml. It removes HTML, JavaScript, SVG, executable files, nested archives, system files, unsafe paths, and other non-page entries. This is structural sanitization, not antivirus scanning.

Why does a sanitized CBR download as CBZ?

The sanitizer creates a new ZIP-based archive because creating RAR files in the browser is not practical. ZIP is the standard container for CBZ and is universally compatible. The page images inside are preserved without re-encoding where possible, so visual quality is maintained.

Does sanitizing a comic reduce image quality?

No. The sanitizer preserves validated page image bytes without re-encoding JPEG, PNG, WebP, or other supported images. This avoids quality loss. However, embedded metadata inside the page images themselves (such as EXIF or IPTC data) is not removed unless that feature is explicitly implemented.

Can FileViewerHub open password-protected CBR or CBZ files?

FileViewerHub can open password-protected CBZ (ZIP) and CBR (RAR) archives when the encryption method is supported by the browser-based parser. You will be prompted to enter the password. The password is never stored, logged, or sent to any server.

Why are some pages missing or unsupported?

The viewer only renders browser-compatible raster image formats (JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and AVIF when the browser supports it). Pages in unsupported formats, pages with invalid image signatures, or entries that are not images are excluded. The archive summary shows how many entries were unsupported.
