What is an MDB file?

An MDB file is a Microsoft Access database file associated with older Access database formats. It commonly uses the Jet database engine and may contain relational tables, fields, records, indexes, relationships, saved queries and other Access database objects.

MDB files are often found in older business, accounting and inventory workflows. The format family may also be used by other software, so not every MDB file was necessarily created by Microsoft Access. An MDB viewer or MDB file viewer can help you inspect these files without installing Access.

If you need to open an MDB file without Access, a browser-based MDB file viewer lets you inspect supported tables and records locally. Learning how to open an MDB file is straightforward: drop the file onto the upload area and the viewer reads its structure in your browser.

What is an ACCDB file?

An ACCDB file is the newer Microsoft Access database format introduced with Access 2007 and used by Access 2010 and later. It uses the ACE database engine and supports the same core relational objects as MDB, plus newer field capabilities such as attachments and multi-valued fields. An ACCDB viewer or ACCDB file viewer can help you inspect these files without installing Access.

FileViewerHub opens ACCDB files on the same MDB & ACCDB Viewer page. To open an ACCDB file without Access, drop the .accdb file onto the upload area. ACCDB support depends on parser compatibility, and the viewer does not claim complete support for every ACCDB feature.

Powerful client-side Access database tools

FileViewerHub processes your Access databases inside your browser for instant table inspection, record search and private export without compromising your privacy.

1

Table and Schema Inspector

Browse the database catalog, inspect table names, row counts, column types, sizes, precision and nullability. Unsupported field types are labelled clearly instead of being silently converted.

2

Virtualized Record Grid

Preview records in bounded batches through a virtualized data grid. Search loaded rows, toggle column visibility, expand long text and inspect binary values without loading an entire large table into memory.

3

Private Browser-Based Export

Export selected table data to CSV, JSON or JSONL without sending the database to a server. Exports use UTF-8 output, preserve exact numeric values and are protected from spreadsheet formula injection.

Tables, schema and records

The viewer reads the database catalog and lists supported user, system and linked tables. Select a table to preview its records in bounded batches, then switch to the Schema tab to inspect column definitions and data types.

Database catalog and table list
User, system and linked table detection
Table names, row counts and column counts
Column names, source types and normalized types
Column sizes, precision, scale and nullability
Record previews in bounded batches
Boolean, numeric, currency, date and text values
Exact decimal and currency preservation
Memo and long-text field previews
Binary and OLE value inspection (metadata only)
Password and encryption detection
Parsing warnings and database metadata

Only functionality that has been implemented is listed above. Records are loaded in bounded batches; very large tables are not loaded in full.

MDB vs ACCDB

MDB and ACCDB are both Microsoft Access database formats, but they use different database engines and support different field capabilities. The table below summarises the key differences.

Open Access databases without Microsoft Access

You can inspect supported MDB and ACCDB databases without installing Microsoft Access, Office, LibreOffice Base or database conversion software. FileViewerHub reads the database structure locally in your browser.

FileViewerHub is intended for quick, private inspection and export, not as a complete replacement for Microsoft Access or professional database-management software.

Privacy and safety

Supported MDB and ACCDB files are parsed inside browser memory and are not uploaded to FileViewerHub servers for standard viewing. The database is read on your device and processed inside your browser using a Web Worker.

Macros, VBA modules, form events and report events are never executed. Linked tables are detected but never connected to external sources. OLE and binary values are treated as untrusted and are not executed or rendered as active content.

Security note

Access databases may contain private business, financial, employee, customer or inventory data. Only open files from sources you trust, and review exported records before sharing them.

FileViewerHub is an independent file-viewing service and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft. Product and format names are used only to identify relevant files and compatibility.

Programs that open MDB and ACCDB files

Frequently asked questions

What is an MDB file?

An MDB file is a Microsoft Access database file associated with older Access database formats (commonly Access 97 through Access 2003, using the Jet database engine). It may contain relational tables, fields, records, indexes, relationships, saved queries and other Access database objects. The MDB format family may also be used by other software, so not every MDB file was necessarily created by Microsoft Access.

What is an ACCDB file?

An ACCDB file is the newer Microsoft Access database format introduced with Access 2007 and used by Access 2010 and later (using the ACE database engine). It supports the same core relational objects as MDB plus newer field types such as attachments and multi-valued fields. FileViewerHub opens ACCDB files on the same MDB & ACCDB Viewer page.

How can I open an MDB file without Microsoft Access?

You can open supported MDB files directly in your browser with FileViewerHub. Drop your .mdb file onto the upload area and inspect supported tables, fields and records without installing Microsoft Access, Office or database conversion software.

Can FileViewerHub open ACCDB files?

Yes. The MDB & ACCDB Viewer opens both .mdb and .accdb files on the same page. ACCDB support depends on parser compatibility, and unsupported or newer ACCDB features are reported clearly rather than being silently ignored.

What is the difference between MDB and ACCDB?

MDB is the older Microsoft Access database format associated with the Jet engine (Access 97-2003). ACCDB is the newer format associated with the ACE engine (Access 2007 and later) and adds capabilities such as attachments and multi-valued fields. Both are handled by the same viewer, with MDB as the primary search target.

Does FileViewerHub upload my database?

No. Supported MDB and ACCDB files are parsed locally inside your browser using a Web Worker. The database contents are not uploaded to FileViewerHub servers for standard viewing, and nothing is sent over the network while the database is being inspected.

Can the viewer display Access tables?

Yes. The viewer reads the database catalog and lists supported user, system and linked tables. Select a table to preview its records in bounded batches through a virtualized data grid.

Can it show fields and data types?

Yes. The Schema tab displays column names, source types, normalized types, sizes, precision, scale, nullability and auto-increment flags for the selected table.

Can it show saved queries?

Saved query definitions are listed where the parser exposes them. Saved queries are never executed. They are rendered as escaped text only, and action queries, parameter queries and external references are not run.

Does the viewer execute Access macros or VBA?

No. The viewer is strictly read-only. Macros, VBA modules, form events and report events are never executed. The viewer inspects supported database structure and data only.

Can it render Access forms and reports?

No. Forms and reports are not rendered. The viewer does not attempt to reproduce the Microsoft Access user interface. Forms, reports, macros and modules are listed as detected objects where the parser exposes them, but they are not executed or rendered.

Can it open password-protected Access databases?

No. When a database appears to be password protected or encrypted, the viewer detects the protection, explains that credentials are required, and does not attempt to guess passwords or remove protection. The file is not uploaded and encryption information is not sent to external services.

Can I export Access tables to CSV?

Yes. Use the Export menu to download the current table preview or filtered rows as CSV. Exports use UTF-8 output, escape delimiters and quotes correctly, preserve exact numeric values, and protect against spreadsheet formula injection. The original database is never overwritten.

Does the viewer modify the original database?

No. The viewer is read-only. It never writes to, modifies, or overwrites the uploaded MDB or ACCDB file. Exports produce new files only.

Why does my MDB file not open?

An MDB file may not open if it is corrupted, truncated, uses an unsupported Jet version, is password protected or encrypted, or is not actually an Access database (for example, a different file renamed with a .mdb extension). The viewer performs content-based format detection and shows a clear message explaining why a file could not be opened.

Why does my ACCDB file not open?

An ACCDB file may not open if it uses an unsupported ACE version, is password protected or encrypted, is corrupted or truncated, or is not actually an Access database. The viewer reports the detected format and a clear reason when an ACCDB file cannot be opened.

Can linked tables connect to external sources?

No. Linked tables are detected and listed, but the viewer never connects to external databases, network shares, SQL Server, SharePoint, ODBC sources or any URL. Connection strings and credentials are masked, and a clear “connection blocked” status is shown.

Can I open a large MDB file on mobile?

The viewer uses a Web Worker and a virtualized data grid so large tables can be browsed without freezing the page. Browser memory and device capabilities vary, so very large databases may not open on every mobile device. When available memory is insufficient, the viewer stops safely and shows a helpful message.

Does the viewer repair corrupted databases?

No. FileViewerHub does not repair, recover or rebuild corrupted databases. It is a read-only inspection tool. When a database appears corrupted or truncated, the viewer reports the problem and does not attempt repair.

Is FileViewerHub affiliated with Microsoft?

No. FileViewerHub is an independent file-viewing service and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft. Product and format names are used only to identify relevant files and compatibility.
