What is an XPS file?

An XPS (XML Paper Specification) file is a fixed-layout electronic document format designed to preserve document layout, formatting, vector artwork, fonts, and appearance across different devices and printers.

XPS documents use a ZIP-based Open Packaging Conventions (OPC) structure. Inside the package, FixedPage XML files define the exact visual layout of each page, including scalable vector paths, Glyphs text elements, embedded font subsets, and image references.

OpenXPS (OXPS) is the international standardized revision (ECMA-388) of Microsoft's legacy XPS format. FileViewerHub supports both .xps and .oxps formats natively, parsing packages locally in your browser so you can view pages, search text, extract images, and export to PDF without installing desktop software.

Powerful Client-Side XPS & OXPS Tools

FileViewerHub processes your XPS and OXPS document packages inside your browser for instant viewing, full text search, image extraction, and multi-page PDF export without compromising your privacy.

1

Vector & Page Rendering

Render FixedPage markups, vector paths, glyphs, and embedded images directly into sharp, scalable SVG in your browser. Read single pages or scroll continuously with smooth zoom and page navigation.

2

Full-Document Text Search

Index and search text across every page in your document. Jump directly to matching occurrences with highlighted contextual snippets, or copy extracted text effortlessly.

3

Export to Multi-Page PDF

Convert and save your XPS and OXPS documents into standard PDF files with 1-click. High-resolution page rendering preserves document layout and vector sharpness locally in your browser.

What you can view inside an XPS file

Fixed-layout page previews with exact typography and vector paths
Indexed document text and full-text search across all pages
Embedded raster images (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP)
Core document metadata (title, creator, description, subject)
Package resource manifests (fonts, print tickets, dictionaries)
Digital signature presence and relationship structure
Page dimensions, orientations, and thumbnail views
Instant 1-click export to standard multi-page PDF documents

Visual page layouts and searchable text rely on supported XPS Glyphs and vector Path structures. Image-only pages without text data will render visually but require OCR for text search.

Open XPS files without Microsoft XPS Viewer

Starting with Windows 10 (version 1803) and Windows 11, Microsoft turned off the default installation of the desktop XPS Viewer app. Users opening .xps files on modern PCs frequently encounter missing app errors.

FileViewerHub provides an instant, browser-based solution. You do not need to enable optional Windows features, install third-party software, or convert files on remote servers. Drag and drop your file to start reading and converting immediately on Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebooks, and mobile browsers.

Export XPS and OXPS Documents to PDF

Because modern operating systems and mobile devices have universal support for PDF, FileViewerHub includes a built-in client-side PDF exporter. Convert any XPS or OXPS document to PDF with a single click.

Privacy

PDF conversion runs entirely inside your browser sandbox. Your original files and the exported PDF documents are never uploaded to any remote server.

Multi-Page PDF Generation

All pages in your document sequence are converted in order, preserving individual page dimensions, orientations, and layout geometry.

High-Resolution Quality

Vector paths and typographic glyphs are rasterized at high resolution, ensuring clear, sharp prints and crisp reading on high-DPI displays.

OXPS is the ECMA-388 standardized evolution of Microsoft's XML Paper Specification. While both formats share identical fixed-layout goals and ZIP-based packaging, they use different XML namespace URIs. FileViewerHub automatically identifies and parses both formats accurately.

Text Search & Image Extraction in XPS Files

When text is stored in supported XPS Glyphs structures, FileViewerHub indexes it for search and text export without requiring Microsoft XPS Viewer. Image-only pages that do not contain text data will render visually but require OCR for search.

Searchable Text

Glyphs elements contain Unicode strings with position coordinates and font sizes. FileViewerHub extracts and indexes this text so you can search keywords across all document pages.

Image Extraction

Embedded raster images (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP) can be previewed and downloaded directly from the viewer dashboard. Vector paths render natively inside page SVGs.

What programs open XPS files?

XPS and OXPS documents can be viewed using several dedicated desktop applications:

Microsoft XPS Viewer (legacy Windows)Evince Document Viewer (Linux / GNOME)Okular (Linux / Windows)MuPDFNiXPSFileViewerHub (online, no install)

While native desktop software can require special installations or codecs on non-Windows platforms, FileViewerHub provides a fast, secure, browser-based solution on any operating system.

Is it safe to open XPS files online?

Business and personal documents often contain proprietary diagrams, financial statements, contracts, or confidential text. Unlike cloud conversion tools that require you to upload your files to external servers, FileViewerHub processes everything client-side.

Your document data never leaves your device, ensuring complete privacy and absolute confidentiality for your documents.

Privacy

Document contents, page text, embedded images, and reading progress never leave your browser sandbox. Only anonymized telemetry (such as viewer type and file size bucket) may be collected.

Frequently asked questions

What is an XPS file?

An XPS (XML Paper Specification) file is a fixed-layout electronic document format developed by Microsoft to preserve document layout, formatting, vector artwork, fonts, and appearance across different devices and printers.

What is an OXPS file?

An OXPS file is an OpenXPS document, the standardized open specification of the format defined by ECMA-388. Like XPS, it uses an Open Packaging Conventions (ZIP) container containing fixed-layout pages and embedded document resources.

What is the difference between XPS and OXPS?

XPS is Microsoft's legacy format, while OXPS is the standardized ECMA-388 OpenXPS format. Both use ZIP-based packaging to store paginated pages. The primary internal difference is the XML namespace URIs. FileViewerHub automatically detects and supports both formats seamlessly.

Can I open XPS files without Microsoft XPS Viewer?

Yes. Drag and drop your .xps or .oxps file into FileViewerHub to view and read your document directly in your browser. Microsoft removed the standalone XPS Viewer from default Windows installations, making our web-based viewer an instant, install-free alternative.

Can I export or convert XPS files to PDF?

Yes. Click 'Export to PDF' in the top bar or toolbar. FileViewerHub renders and converts all document pages directly to a standard multi-page PDF document locally in your browser without uploading your files.

Can I search text inside an XPS document?

Yes. FileViewerHub indexes supported XPS Glyphs elements to enable full text search across every page in the document. You can navigate directly between search matches with contextual text snippets.

Can I extract images from an XPS file?

Yes. XPS packages often bundle embedded raster images (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP). FileViewerHub lists all embedded image resources, letting you inspect dimensions, see which pages reference them, and download individual image files.

Can FileViewerHub open multi-page XPS files?

Yes. FileViewerHub supports multi-page documents with interactive page thumbnails, single-page reading, continuous scroll, zoom controls, fit-to-width, fit-to-page, and keyboard navigation.

Are PDF exports generated on an external server?

No. All page rendering and PDF generation are performed strictly inside your browser memory using Web Workers and JavaScript. Your files, text, and exported PDFs never leave your device.

Are XPS files uploaded to any server?

No. All parsing, SVG rendering, text search, and PDF exports happen entirely client-side in your browser. Your files, confidential text, and embedded images never travel over the network.
