What is a QBO file?

A QBO file is a QuickBooks Web Connect financial transaction file used to import downloaded bank or credit-card transactions into compatible QuickBooks products.

QBO files use the OFX-family structure with QuickBooks application-specific fields. They contain account information, statement date ranges, transaction lists and balances - but they are not complete QuickBooks company files.

Important: A QBO file is not a QuickBooks company file (.qbw), backup (.qbb), portable company file (.qbm) or IIF file. It only contains transaction data for import.

What is a QBO file?

A QBO file is a QuickBooks Web Connect financial transaction file. It contains bank or credit-card account information, statement periods and transaction data in an OFX-family structure with QuickBooks application-specific fields. It is used to import downloaded transactions into compatible QuickBooks products.

Is a QBO file a complete QuickBooks company file?

No. A QBO file is not a complete QuickBooks company file. It does not contain invoices, customers, vendors, payroll or a full accounting database. It only contains transaction data for import. QuickBooks company files use different formats such as .qbw, .qbb and .qbm, which FileViewerHub does not support.

How can I open a QBO file without QuickBooks?

Upload your .qbo file to FileViewerHub's QBO Viewer. The file is parsed entirely in your browser - no QuickBooks installation is required. You can inspect account details, statement periods, balances and individual transactions, then export selected records as CSV or JSON.

Does FileViewerHub upload my QBO file?

No. All parsing happens locally inside your browser using a Web Worker. Your QBO file, account numbers, transactions, payees and memos are never sent to a server, never stored in analytics and never written to the console.

Can the viewer show account balances?

Yes. The viewer displays ledger balances and available balances where the file provides them, along with the balance date. These are values supplied by the file, not calculated by FileViewerHub.

Can it display bank and credit-card transactions?

Yes. The viewer supports both banking statements (BANKMSGSRSV1) and credit-card statements (CREDITCARDMSGSRSV1). Transactions from all accounts are shown in a searchable, filterable table.

Why are account numbers masked?

Account numbers are masked by default (for example, •••• 4821) to protect sensitive financial identifiers. You can reveal a full account ID by clicking the reveal button next to a specific account. Reveal state is session-only and is not stored.

What is a FITID?

A FITID (Financial Institution Transaction ID) is a unique identifier assigned to each transaction by the financial institution. It is used to detect duplicate transactions during import. If the same FITID appears more than once in the same account, the viewer flags it as an exact identifier duplicate.

Why are duplicate transactions flagged?

The viewer detects two kinds of duplicates: exact identifier duplicates (the same FITID within the same account) and potential duplicates (a heuristic based on date, amount, payee and memo). Duplicate detection helps you review data before importing into QuickBooks. No records are deleted or modified.

Can I convert QBO transactions to CSV?

Yes. Use the Export menu to download filtered or all transactions as CSV. The export preserves exact decimal amounts, currency codes and protects against spreadsheet formula injection. You can also apply privacy options to mask or remove account numbers, payees and memos.

Is QBO the same as OFX?

QBO and OFX both use the OFX-family structure, but they are not identical. A QBO file is a QuickBooks Web Connect file with application-specific fields for QuickBooks import. A general OFX file may not contain the same application-specific extensions. FileViewerHub treats them as related but distinct formats.

Is QBO the same as QFX?

No. QBO is for QuickBooks Web Connect import, while QFX is for Quicken Web Connect import. Both use the OFX-family structure but target different applications. FileViewerHub provides separate viewers for each format.

Can FileViewerHub import the file into QuickBooks?

No. FileViewerHub is a read-only viewer. It does not connect to QuickBooks, does not import transactions and does not modify the original file. It only inspects and exports data locally.

Why does a QBO file fail validation?

A QBO file may fail validation if it is missing the OFX header, has a malformed structure, uses an unsupported encoding, or is truncated. The viewer shows a clear error message explaining the problem without exposing internal stack traces.

Can I open large QBO files on mobile?

Yes. The viewer uses a Web Worker for parsing and a virtualized transaction table, so large files remain responsive on mobile devices. If a file exceeds available browser memory, the viewer shows a clear message instead of crashing.
